Gender and Same Gender Attraction-Part 1

"In His grand design, when God first created man, He created duality of the sexes. The ennobling expression of that duality is found in marriage. One individual is complementary to the other. As Paul stated, 'Neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord' (1 Corinthians 11:11). There is no other arrangement that meets the divine purposes of the Almighty. Man and woman are His creations. Their duality is His design. Their complementary relationships and functions are fundamental to His purposes. One is incomplete without the other."
- President Gordon B. Hinckley

This week in class we discussed a very hot topic: Gender and Same-sex attraction.
We focused on the influence of gender on one’s family roles and experience. We considered the differences between males and females, and the advantages one’s gender traits may provide in establishing and filling those roles. Later in the week, we discussed exceptions to gender-typical tendencies and identity. We then went into scientific theories addressing homosexuality and the implications of those theories.
It has been very interesting to study these topics and research, especially since most of the data runs parallel with the teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
The first thing I want to discuss is gender. Feminism today has evolved a lot in the last decade. Today it seems that women are more focused on making themselves the victim as well as trying to make themselves equal to and even better than men. I don't support this kind of feminism. I believe men and women deserve equal opportunities but should embrace their differences. There is plenty of evidence that shows that men are very different from women. In fact, a number of structural elements in the human brain differ between males and females. "Females often have a larger hippocampus, our human memory center. Females also often have a higher density of neural connections into the hippocampus. As a result, girls and women tend to input or absorb more sensorial and emotive information than males do...If you note your observations over the next months of boys and girls and women and men, you will find that females tend to sense a lot more of what is going on around them throughout the day, and they retain that sensorial information more than men...Scientists have discovered approximately 100 gender differences in the brain, and the importance of these differences cannot be overstated. Understanding gender differences from a neurological perspective not only opens the door to greater appreciation of the different genders, it also calls into question how we parent, educate, and support our children from a young age"(Gregory L. Jantz Ph.D.).
Many parents have tried to raise their children "gender-neutral" because they believe that TV producers, toysellers, and parents steer kids into stereotypical roles. Most soon realize, however, that you can't raise them the same. Children act just like their stereotypes even with gender-neutral parenting. It's been observed that boys at a young age tend to be more violent, aggressive/competitive, and energetic while the girls care more about relationships, being cooperative, and were more empathetic. Most toy companies, in fact, have tried to sell toys equally, but they don’t have much success because not every toy is bought equally by boys and girls.
Our gender differences are complementary, especially when it comes to family.

ALL HUMAN BEINGS—male and female—are created in the image of God. Each is a beloved spirit son or daughter of heavenly parents, and, as such, each has a divine nature and destiny. Gender is an essential characteristic of individual premortal, mortal, and eternal identity and purpose.- The Family Proclamation
